Basinger, Jeanine, In Collaboration with the Trustees of the Frank Capra Archives. The It's a Wonderful Life Book. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1986.

The portrayal of Mary as a librarian in It's a Wonderful Life is fascinating because of its extreme negativity towards the library profession. The book contains a complete screenplay, notes on casting and production, interviews with Frank Capra and Jimmy Stewart, and numerous photographs.

Robbins, Louise S. The Dismissal of Miss Ruth Brown: Civil Rights, Censorship, and the American Library. Norman, University of Oklahoma Press, 2000.

This book is particularly interesting because Ruth Brown both fit the popular stereotype and went against it. She was a spinster with upswept hair and an efficient manner, but she was also the adoptive mother of two girls and civil rights activist.

Tevis, Ray and Brenda. The Image of Librarians in Cinema, 1917-1999. Jefferson, North Carolina: McFarland & Company, 2005.

This book gives a nice overview of the portrayals of librarians in film, or "reel librarians." It details the stereotypes present in the various eras and in specific films. It has a nice selection of illustrations as well.
